Worker Education Schemes

Young employees were encouraged to attend 'night school' and were allowed to leave work an hour early twice a week. The company pioneered the idea of workers continuing their education while working at Bournville. The Day Continuation School was first set up for workers to carry on studying subjects such as arithmetic and geography. Attendance was compulsory for Bournville workers and there was even a 'uniform' for pupils. Some workers thought the programme too much like school, so subjects like woodwork, modelling, surveying and household repairs were introduced.
